San Juan La Laguna has a reputation as Lake Atitlán’s artisan centre, known for its traditional textile cooperative, natural dye workshops, and commitment to sustainable tourism. This peaceful village, just a short boat ride from Panajachel or a ten minute tuktuk from San Pedro, offers visitors a chance to experience Guatemalan culture while supporting true local communities and artisan producers.
San Juan, in my opinion, was one of the most rewarding villages to visit, and I’d really consider staying here if I went back to Lake Atitlán, Guatemala. The town is famous for its women’s weaving cooperative, where you can watch artisans create stunning textiles using traditional techniques and natural dyes derived from local plants.
This focus on preserving traditional crafts extends to the accommodation options, many of which showcase local artistry in their décor and design.

How Long to Stay in San Juan
The ideal length of stay in San Juan depends on your interest in traditional crafts and local culture. If you’re just looking to visit the cooperatives and buy some textiles, 2-3 days might be enough. However, if you want to participate in workshops, visit the chocolate experience and do some hiking too, you could keep yourself busy for up to a week.
If you’re looking for somewhere to stay long-term, San Juan is a really lovely, remote village, and I love it even more because it has road access to San Pedro, so you can visit another, slightly larger, town without having to get on a boat. (Don’t get me wrong, the boats are great, but they do put limits on you!)
