Whether you’re heading to the beach, hiking through the mountains, or somewhere in between, packing for a week-long trip always feels like a puzzle. What do you actually need? What can you leave behind? After years of living out of a backpack and more week-long trips than I’d dare to count, I’ve finally nailed my 7-day packing list.
Here’s everything you need to pack for a 7-day trip, whether you’re going carry-on only or taking a full suitcase.
Who this is for: Anyone packing for a one-week trip and wanting to get it right first time, whether that’s a beach vacation, city break, hiking trip, or cruise (and I recommend additions/changes for each type of trip).

Quick tips:
- Travel insurance is non-negotiable (I use SafetyWing every time I travel)
- A 40L carry-on bag is enough for most 7-day trips
- Stick to neutral colours, or at least choose one colour palette, so everything mixes and matches
- Always check what your accommodation provides before you pack toiletries
Documents: Don’t Leave Home Without These
For international travel especially, getting your documents sorted before anything else is the best way to start. Keep these somewhere with easy access, like your personal item or a small pouch in your carry-on bag:
Passport: Make sure it’s valid (many countries require at least 6 months’ validity beyond your travel dates).
Travel insurance documents: Please don’t skip this one. I never travel without printed copies of my travel insurance documents, so they are to hand in case of an emergency.
Proof of health cover: EU travellers, this means your physical EHIC card. A photo on your phone usually isn’t enough, and your travel insurance may be invalid without it.
All travel tickets and boarding passes: I keep digital copies on my phone and a screenshot saved offline, just in case.
Visa documentation: If required for your destination, have it printed and/or saved offline.
What Bag to Take for a 7-Day Trip
This is the first decision you’ll make, and it shapes everything else.
Carry-on luggage only is my strong preference for week-long trips. You avoid baggage fees, skip the carousel at arrivals, and there’s zero risk of lost luggage. Most 40L backpacks or cabin-sized suitcases are enough for 7 days if you pack smart. (If you’ve read my packing list for Central America, you’ll know there was a point where I vowed never to check a bag again.)
Duffel bag, suitcase, or rucksack? It depends on your trip. A rolling suitcase is great for city breaks. A travel backpack is better if you’re moving around a lot or staying in hostels. A duffel bag sits somewhere in the middle. Whatever you choose, be mindful of weight limits, especially with budget airlines.
Use packing cubes. A lot of people think packing cubes are unnecessary, but for me they make a real difference. They keep everything organised, and they make repacking at 6am in a hostel dorm infinitely less stressful.
What to Pack in Your Personal Item
Every airline allows a small personal item (think: a small backpack or handbag). This is where your most important things should live, and it shouldn’t ever leave your sight! Here’s what I always put in mine:
- Passport
- Proof of health cover (EHIC card if you’re in the EU)
- Travel insurance documents
- Travel tickets and boarding passes
- Water bottle
- Tissues and/or toilet paper (you’d be amazed how often you need this)
- Power bank
- Plug converter
- Entertainment for the journey (a book, puzzle, downloaded podcasts)
- Basic first aid kit (paracetamol, ibuprofen, rehydration sachets)
- Cash (US Dollars are the easiest currency to spend internationally)
- Sunglasses
- If I’m travelling solo, I keep a handwritten list of emergency phone numbers in case my phone gets stolen; my airline, accommodation, and a trusted contact at home
7-Day Clothing Packing List
The specifics will depend on where you’re going, but this is my general rule of thumb for a week-long trip. Adjust the ratios based on your destination — more tank tops for a beach trip, more layers and long sleeves for somewhere cold, more practical clothes for a hiking itinerary.
The key tip: stick to neutral colours or one colour palette. It sounds boring, but it means every top goes with every bottom, and you spend less time staring into your suitcase at 8am.
Clothing checklist for 7 days:
- 8 pairs of underwear
- 8 pairs of socks
- 2 bras (if relevant)
- 8 tops (split based on your destination: for a beach vacation, I’d do 4 tank tops, 2 dressy tops, 2 floaty cover-up style tops; for a hiking trip, I’d swap those for technical layers and long-sleeved shirts)
- 3-4 bottoms (a mix of trousers, shorts, skirts, or a pair of jeans depending on where you’re going — for a resort trip I’d lean into dresses and skirts; for hiking, mostly trousers and leggings)
- 2 pairs of pyjamas or sleep clothes
- 1 jacket (make it the heaviest item you own, and wear it on the plane to save space)
- 2 pairs of shoes, with one of them on your feet
- Flip flops if you have the space (almost always worth it)
- 1-2 sets of workout clothes (if that’s your thing)
- Hat
- Swimwear if needed (2-3 pieces for a beach vacation or cruise)
- Somewhere for your dirty laundry (a plastic bag works perfectly)
For a carry-on only trip: wear your bulky clothes on travel days, and don’t be afraid to use hotel laundry services or hand-wash socks and underwear mid-trip. It extends your wardrobe without adding weight.
Toiletry Bag Checklist
If you’re flying carry-on only, split this into liquids (which go in a clear bag for airport security) and non-liquids. Nothing over 100ml, and nothing flammable.
Also worth checking before you pack: what does your accommodation provide? Hotel rooms usually supply towels and basic toiletries. At a hostel, you’ll typically pay extra for a towel rental, so it’s worth bringing your own.
Liquids:
- Toothpaste
- Body wash
- Face wash
- Shampoo and conditioner
- Moisturiser
- Hair styling products
- Deodorant
- Suncream (essential even if you’re not going somewhere sunny; for example, factor 50 at altitude is non-negotiable)
- Lip balm
- Perfume
- Insect repellent (for most tropical destinations)
- Bug-bite cream
Non-liquids:
- Toothbrush
- Prescription medications (these should be in your personal item, not your checked bag)
- Makeup
- Hairbrush and comb
- Hair ties
- Cotton pads
- Razor
- Tweezers
- Nail scissors or clippers
- Pads, tampons, or a Mooncup if you’ll need them
Destination-Specific Extras
For a 7-day beach vacation or resort trip:
- Reef-safe sunscreen (required at many destinations)
- Snorkelling gear if you have it (cheaper to bring than to rent)
- [Microfibre beach towel](affiliate link)
- Waterproof phone pouch
- After-sun lotion
For a 7-day hiking trip:
- Hiking boots or shoes (not trainers — I learned this the hard way on the Acatenango Volcano hike in Guatemala)
- Walking poles (seriously, get the poles)
- Base layers and thermals
- Waterproofs
- Blister plasters
- Altitude sickness pills if relevant
- Extra snacks (energy gels, protein bars)
- A day pack for shorter hikes
For a 7-day cruise:
- Formal wear for dinner nights
- Seasickness tablets
- A lanyard for your cruise card
- Plug adapters (ship power outlets vary)
For a 7-day trip to Southeast Asia:
- Lightweight, breathable fabrics only
- A sarong or light scarf (for temple visits and beach cover-ups)
- Stomach medication (Imodium, probiotics)
- A padlock for hostel lockers
Day Bag
Don’t forget a day bag for excursions and sightseeing. I use a small, lightweight backpack that folds up inside my main bag, and it can double up as an extra bag on the way home after I’ve bought one too many souvenirs 👀
7-Day Packing List FAQs
What size bag do I need for a 7-day trip?
For most 7-day trips, a 40L carry-on bag is enough if you pack efficiently. Packing cubes help a lot. If you’re travelling to a cold climate or need specialist equipment (ski gear, hiking poles), you might need to check a bag.
How many clothes should I pack for 7 days?
Pack 8 tops, 3-4 bottoms, 8 pairs of underwear, 8 pairs of socks, and 2 pairs of pyjamas. Stick to neutral colours so everything mixes and matches, and you’ll never feel like you’ve run out of outfits.
Do I need to pack toiletries if I’m staying in a hotel?
Most hotels provide soap, shampoo, and sometimes conditioner. Always check before you pack — it’ll save you space and weight. Items like your toothbrush, toothpaste, and prescription medications should always be packed regardless.
What documents do I need for international travel?
At minimum: your passport, travel insurance documents, and any health coverage documentation. Keep digital copies saved offline on your phone, and store emergency contact numbers somewhere separate from your phone (I keep a handwritten list in my personal item).
Can I pack for 7 days in a carry-on bag?
Yes, for most destinations. The key is sticking to the clothing quantities above, rolling rather than folding, using packing cubes, and wearing your heaviest items on the plane. If you’re going somewhere very cold or doing a specialist activity, checked luggage might make more sense.
How do I pack light for a week-long trip?
Neutral colours, versatile pieces, and a no-duplicates rule. Don’t pack “just in case” items — if you can buy it when you get there, leave it at home.
No matter wherever you go, whichever country you go, mosquito net is a must. If you are planning to stay outdoor then mosquito net is a must. Not being able to sleep can be an issue but the bigger issue is of dengue and malaria. Many portable kind of mosquito nets are available in the market.

I’m amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I come across a blog that’s both equally educative and amusing, and
without a doubt, you’ve hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too
few people are speaking intelligently about.
Now i’m very happy I came across this during my hunt for something relating to this.
I know this if off topic but I’m looking into starting my own weblog
and was curious what all is required to get set up? I’m assuming having a blog like yours would
cost a pretty penny? I’m not very web savvy so I’m not 100% certain.
Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
I’m not that much of a online reader to be honest but

the same outdated rehashed information. Fantastic read!

Woah! I’m really enjoying the template/theme of this site.
It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s tough to
get that “perfect balance” between usability and appearance.
I must say you’ve done a great job with this.
Also, the blog loads extremely fast for me
on Firefox. Exceptional Blog!
Saved as a favorite, I like your website!
It’s hard to find well-informed people in this particular topic,
but you sound like you know what you’re talking about!
